Christopher Gorham on Netflix's "The Lincoln Lawyer"

Christopher Gorham is an actor and director, known for his characters in the ABC series Ugly Betty, Insatiable, Covert Affairs, Once Upon a Time, and 2 Broke Girls.

Gorham talked to Padrisimo Magazine about starring in the new original series The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix, which premieres on May 13, as well as his CBS teen-parenting comedy pilot, Unplanned in Akron.

Tell us about the new series The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix

C: I remembered the Lincoln Lawyer from the Matthew Cony film from over a decade ago. A lot of people remember this movie and this show are based off a series of Michael Connelly’s books about a lawyer named “Mickey Haller,” a Los Angeles-based defense attorney who is known for working out of a Lincoln Town car instead of a law office.

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo plays “Mickey Haller,” which is great for a couple of reasons. One being that he’s a fantastic actor, but also, he’s an LA Latino, so having an actual Latino in that role is nice to get that representation. And it was a nice little reunion with Becki Newton from Ugly Betty.

Tell us about your character, ‘Trevor Elliott’

C: ‘Trevor Elliot’ is a little bit like a more well-known name, is kind of an Elon Musk type of guy, is somebody who’s like a high-profile tech guy, who has been accused of double homicide, and ‘Mickey’ comes in to defend ‘Trevor,’ and it’s a very high-profile case when he really needs a big, high-profile win. So, the case of defending ‘Trevor Elliot’ becomes the big case that lasts the whole season.

What’s the biggest challenge about taking this role?

C: It was an emotionally challenging part. This is a guy who has been accused of killing his wife and her lover. You have the emotional impact of the loss of losing your wife, whom you love, the complicated emotions of the affair, and then the complicated emotions of having to go on trial to try and save your life.

Can you introduce the Unplanned in Akron CBS pilot?

C: I hope people get to see it. It’s such a funny, heartwarming show about a regular young family trying to make things work. It’s about these two teenagers who have a baby and end up deciding to drop out of high school to raise their kid, and they move in with the boy’s parents, who are myself and Katie Mixon. It’s this family comedy about this mixed family, trying to make things work and feeling unexpectedly old. These two grandparents are only forty years old [laugh] and I don’t feel like they aren't totally comfortable with being labeled “grandparents,” and yet you have these two teenagers that they want to live their lives.

How do you relate to your character, “Jeff”?

C: It’s funny because my oldest kid is twenty-one, so, like, this could very well have been me. I relate a lot to my character because none of our friends were having kids when we started having kids. I mean, we weren’t in our teens, but we were in our mid-twenties, and it was very isolating. We suddenly had a baby, and then we couldn’t go out. We were home, and we had to take care of a baby, and we were exhausted. Slowly, your friends don’t come around as much, or they stop calling and asking if you can go because they know you can’t. It’s not to be mean, but it’s just your lives that diverge. So, I very much relate to that.

You have a YouTube channel, but you haven’t posted anything since a year ago. What happened?

C: I started it because I was running the New York City marathon to raise money for Kulture City, and then the marathon was done, and then I did a couple of interviews. I interviewed a couple of interesting women, like Imani Barbarin, and we talked about things like disability rights issues and accessibility issues, which were just fascinating. I highly recommend going and checking out Imani Barbarin's social media and her blog. I also interviewed Mara Gay, from the New York Times editorial page. We talked early on during the pandemic because she was one of the first high-profile people that came out to talk about her experience having COVID.

Then I got busy. It was in the middle of the pandemic; we have three kids; dealing with an online school; it was just a lot. I think it was a mix of being busy and just feeling kind of tired and not having the extra creative energy to pour into something new that I wasn’t clear on what the point of it was. I’ve left it up and I'm hoping to keep creating and putting some new content on there. I just don’t know when it’s going to be.

C: Fue emocionalmente desafiante. Este es un tipo que ha sido acusado de matar a su esposa y a su amante. Tienes el impacto emocional de perder a tu esposa, a quien amas, las emociones complicadas del engaño y luego las emociones complicadas de tener que ir a juicio para tratar de salvar tu vida.

C: Espero que la gente llegue a verlo. Es un programa tan divertido y conmovedor sobre una familia joven que intenta hacer que las cosas funcionen. Se trata de estos dos adolescentes que tienen un bebé y terminan decidiendo abandonar la escuela secundaria para criar a su hijo, y se mudan con los padres del chico, que somos Katie Mixon y yo. ¿En qué se parece tu personaje a ti?

C: Es gracioso porque mi hijo mayor tiene veintiún años, así que bien podría haber sido yo. Me identifico mucho con mi personaje porque ninguno de nuestros amigos tenía hijos cuando empezamos a tener hijos. De repente tuvimos un bebé y luego no pudimos salir. Estábamos en casa, teníamos que cuidar a un bebé y estábamos exhaustos.

Tienes un canal de YouTube, pero no has publicado nada desde hace un año. ¿Qué sucedió?

C: Lo comencé porque estaba corriendo el maratón de la ciudad de Nueva York para recaudar dinero para Kulture City, y luego terminó el maratón, y hice un par de entrevistas. Entrevisté a un par de mujeres interesantes, como Imani Barbarin, y hablamos sobre cuestiones como los derechos de las personas con discapacidad. Recomiendo mucho ir a las redes sociales de Imani Barbarin y su blog. También entrevisté a Mara Gay, de la página editorial del ‘New York Times’, hablamos desde el principio durante la pandemia porque ella fue una de las primeras personas de alto perfil que salió a hablar sobre su experiencia con el COVID.
