Davi Santos talks about CBS’ new medical drama

Actor Davi Santos was born in Rio de Janeiro and raised in the outskirts of New York City in Astoria, Queens. ‘Tell Me A Story’, ‘Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders’, ‘Switched at Birth’, ‘Will & Grace’, and others are among his many television appearances. Santos can now be seen as Dr. ‘Joey Costa’ in CBS’ new medical procedural drama ‘Good Sam,’ Wednesdays (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*.
Davi Santos spoke exclusively with Padrisimo Magazine from Toronto, Canada, and told us what the new CBS medical drama will be about, his biggest challenge about taking on this role, new projects for 2022 and much more!
How do you feel now that ‘Good Sam’ is finally out?
D: Surreal! it’s only begun to finally register that it’s out. I’ve spent so much time being, like, “this is the maybe show, oh, this is the show that maybe a pilot, maybe a series;” since February 2020… literally two years. I’ve been saying one year; I can’t even comprehend it’s been two years.
What’s going to surprise people about the new CBS medical drama ‘Good Sam’?
D: How far will Sam go. I think that’ll be the surprise. How important this is to her, how this becomes life-defining, how this is something that she’s willing to put so many things on the line for. We start asking the question, “was that worth losing for the position?” Sam starts to re-question whether she's losing her goodness by trying to get what she wants. It kind of feels political in that way.
Tell us about your character ‘Joey Costa’?
D: ‘Joey’ is extraordinarily dedicated, almost to a fault, and in a way, he relates very much to both ‘Griff’ and ‘Sam’, almost more to ‘Griff’ in that way, because the first half of the season, we see ‘Joey’ ready to perform any surgery, completely prepared, studying, knowing everything inside and out, but to the extent where he’s almost bullying the others to be there. He wants to be first, and he doesn’t care what it’s going to take to do it, but it starts to bite him in the ass.
So, he must make a choice; either lose friends and, potentially ruin his relationship because the job matters most, or learn that maybe he needs to re-look at his relationships because they’re good for him and that won’t sacrifice his ultimate goals. That’s the choice he must make at least halfway through the show.
What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role?
D: The biggest challenge is about actually being accurate and relaying a faithful portrayal of these real heroes. Right now, we’re seeing more than ever how it’s our healthcare providers who are putting their lives on the line. We want to make sure that we are as accurate and respectfully as possible while also allowing the drama to take place.
How well do you know medical terminology?
D: I love it! I got a Bachelor of Science in college. I love polysyllabic Latin derived words and being Latino and speaking Portuguese and learning “Español;” it’s all there. Certain diseases like thrombosis in Portuguese is literally the same word.
The other night I was trying to take care of someone that was almost hypothermic, and I was reading about the ST segments, and I was, “what is that?” but it’s so fun to then look it up. We’re learning about the human body while doing the show, so I walk away with a new vocabulary and a new understanding of these processes that we’re depicting for everybody on TV. So, it’s fun.
How good is your Portuguese?
D: (Portuguese) Podemos ter esse diálogo em português ao invés de inglês.
And your Spanish?
D: (Spanish) Podemos hablar en español también. Yo necesito sacar un poquito el “crust” de mi español, pero podemos hablar también en español si quieres.
What is your greatest accomplishment as an actor so far?
D: ¿En español o inglés? No, I’m kidding (laughs). Honestly, I feel so grateful. My career track has always felt like I’ve done things that I’ve never accomplished the year before. I’ve just been blessed. Personally, I feel like it’s one accomplishment after the other and for that, I’m just very grateful.
Is there a role you have not played but would like to someday?
D: I would love to do a period piece, I think it’s, like, the next step. The closest thing to a period piece was doing Melendez brothers. I want, like, 1860s, 1870s, 1920s, 1930s; like the street covered in, like, those old cars, the outfits, something like that. Or even if it’s like a biopic, but in that period, it would be something “riquísimo” to do.
Any new projects for 2022?
D: I have two potential projects but until things are set in stone, I kind of just want to be hands-off about it, you know? Travel as well. I mean, we have been doing this for six months, so it’ll be nice if I have some time afterwards and if the world permits it and we’re not in, like, another peak, it’d be nice to get out because I find that very rewarding.

¿Cómo te sientes ahora que ‘Good Sam’ ha salido finalmente al aire?
D: ¡Es surrealista! Apenas he empezado a notar que ya está al aire. He pasado tanto tiempo pensando como, “este podría ser el show, oh, este es el show que tal vez podría ser un piloto, o tal vez una serie”; desde febrero 2020... literalmente han sido dos años. He estado diciendo que es un año; ni siquiera puedo comprender que han sido dos años.
¿Qué va a sorprender a la gente sobre el nuevo drama médico de CBS ‘Good Sam’?
D: Hasta dónde llegará ‘Sam’. Creo que esa será la sorpresa. Qué tan importante es esto para ella, cómo se convierte en algo que define su vida, cómo es algo por lo que está dispuesta a arriesgar muchas cosas. Empezamos a preguntarnos, “¿valió la pena perder todo eso por el puesto?” ‘Sam’ empieza a replantearse si está perdiendo su bondad al intentar conseguir lo que quiere. En ese sentido, se siente como algo político.
Háblanos de tu personaje ‘Joey Costa’
D: ‘Joey’ es extraordinariamente dedicado, casi de manera exagerada, y en cierto modo se identifica mucho, tanto con ‘Griff’ como con ‘Sam’, pero casi más con ‘Griff’ en ese sentido, porque la primera mitad de la temporada vemos a ‘Joey’ listo para realizar cualquier operación, completamente preparado, estudiando, conociendo todo por dentro y por fuera, pero hasta el punto de que casi hostigar a los demás para lograr estar allí. Quiere ser el primero, y no le importa lo que cueste, pero pronto empieza a salirle el tiro por la culata.
Así que debe tomar una decisión: o bien perder amigos y arruinar potencialmente su relación porque el trabajo es lo más importante, o bien aprender que tal vez deba reconsiderar sus relaciones porque son buenas para él y eso no sacrificará sus objetivos finales. Esa es la decisión que debe tomar al menos a la mitad de la serie.
¿Cuál es el mayor reto de asumir este papel?
D: El mayor reto consiste en ser realmente preciso y transmitir un retrato exacto de estos héroes reales. Justo ahora, estamos viendo más que nunca cómo nuestros proveedores de atención médica en nuestro sistema de salud, y nuestros trabajadores están poniendo sus vidas en juego. Queremos asegurarnos de que somos lo más honorablemente específicos posible, al tiempo que permitimos que el drama tenga lugar.
¿Conoces bien la terminología médica?
D: ¡Me encanta! Me licencié en ciencias en la universidad. Me encantan las palabras polisilábicas derivadas del latín y todo está ahí siendo latino, al hablar Portugués, y aprender Español. Ciertas enfermedades terminan siendo literalmente la misma palabra, como por ejemplo la palabra, Trombosis.
La otra noche estaba tratando de cuidar a alguien que casi tenía hipotérmia, y estaba leyendo sobre los segmentos ST, y yo decía, “¿qué es eso?”, pero es muy divertido buscarlo después. Estamos aprendiendo sobre el cuerpo humano mientras hacemos el programa, así que me voy con un nuevo vocabulario y una nueva comprensión de estos procesos que estamos representando para todo el mundo en la televisión. Así que es divertido.
¿Qué tal está tu portugués?
D: (Portugués) Podemos ter esse diálogo em português ao invés de inglês.
¿Y tu español?
D: (Español) Podemos hablar en español también. Yo necesito sacar un poquito el “crust” de mi español, pero podemos hablar también en español si quieres.
¿Cuál es tu mayor logro como actor hasta ahora?
D: ¿En español o inglés? No, estoy bromeando (risas). Sinceramente, me siento muy agradecido. En mi trayectoria profesional siempre he sentido que he hecho cosas que nunca había logrado el año anterior. Simplemente he sido bendecido. Personalmente, siento que es un logro tras otro y por eso, estoy muy agradecido.
¿Hay algún papel que no hayas interpretado pero que te gustaría hacer algún día?
D: Me encantaría hacer una obra de época, creo que es el siguiente paso. Lo más parecido a una obra de época fue hacer Los hermanos Meléndez. Me gustaría algo como de 1860, 1870, 1920, 1930; con la calle cubierta de, como, esos viejos coches, los trajes, algo así. O incluso si es como una película biográfica, pero en esa época, sería algo riquísimo de hacer.
¿Algún proyecto nuevo para este 2022?
D: Tengo dos proyectos potenciales, pero hasta que las cosas no estén confirmadas, no quiero decir nada al respecto hasta que esté finalizado, ¿sabes? (risas). También viajar. Hemos estado haciendo esto durante seis meses, así que estaría bien si tengo algo de tiempo después y si el mundo lo permite y, estaría bien salir porque lo encuentro muy gratificante.
