Ivan Shaw To Star In Spaghetti Western TV Series ‘That Dirty Black Bag’

Ivan Shaw, who was born in Taiwan and raised in Upland, California, is presently balancing parts in ‘Oliver Hudson’s’ new blockbuster FOX drama, ‘The Cleaning Lady’, and ‘Dominic Cooper’s’ new AMC+ spaghetti western, ‘The Dirty Black Bag’, in which he plays a deputy to ‘Dominic Cooper's Sheriff McCoy’. Next, he'll star alongside Taylor Schilling and Connie Britton in creator Jason Katims’ AppleTV+ drama series, ‘Dear Edward’.

Ivan Shaw spoke exclusively with Padrisimo Magazine and told us about the new AMC+ spaghetti western series, ‘The Dirty Black Bag’, which role he has not played but would like to someday, new projects for 2022, and much more!

What have you learned about yourself during the pandemic?

I: I've learned that I really need to kind of slow down a bit and take as many breaths as possible whenever I can, because it can be a very daunting, sad, and horrific world sometimes. And I think for me, it's necessary to reevaluate what's important and to take some time away from the hustle and take it easy from time to time.

Could you introduce us to ‘The Dirty Black Bag’?

I: It is a spaghetti western series shot in Italy and in Spain. It is set in a fictitious town called Greenville in a fictitious time where people are trying to stay alive and thrive. At the very beginning of the episode, a bounty hunter, ‘Red Bill’, comes to town and starts stirring the pot a little bit. It's an eight-part series.

What can you tell us about your character, 'Kurt'?

I: I play ‘Sheriff McCoy's’ right-hand man. ‘Kurt’ is a fascinating character. In that world, notably Asian, he is the only person who looks like that. So, it was a very interesting way to approach this story, this world, and this character.

You are going to star in ‘Dear Edward’ as well. Do tell!

I: This all happened recently, so I don't know what I'm at liberty to say about the project. I will just say it's a series for Apple TV by someone you may know from ‘Parenthood’ and who was a show runner on ‘Friday Night Lights’. I think you can expect a very interesting show to come out of him because he just doesn't miss. He's one of those writers that creates interesting premises and human stories that I feel like we can all bond over, especially in a crazy time like we're currently living in.

Is there a role you have not played but would like to someday?

I: I'm really into surfing and martial arts, and I would love to play characters in those worlds. I love combat. I've done very little martial arts on camera, but I've been practicing it for 24 years. I typically don't get cast in these tough guy parts, which is fine, but, yeah, I think something along those lines.

Tell us about the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Fund

I: Every day, there are Asian Americans (all over the world) that are assaulted for no good reason. And you can chalk that up to the rhetoric and the news or whatever, and all the stuff that's happening in the world; but, at the end of the day, the sad fact is that people are being assaulted for no reason. And you can't help but feel completely helpless when it's not happening right in front of you.

It's a tough thing to talk about, because I'm literally seeing footage of people that look like my grandma being beaten up for no reason. It's incredibly aggra-

vating. So, the GoFund is to raise money to help these people cover everything from medical bills to whatever their families need. I think it's something that needs to be in the mainstream media a lot more, because it's certainly a huge issue that we're dealing with today and it has to stop. I'm not sure exactly what the overarching solution is to that, but it has to stop.

¿Qué has aprendido sobre ti durante la pandemia?

I: He aprendido que realmente necesito reducir un poco la velocidad de la vida, porque a veces puede ser un mundo muy desalentador, triste y horrible. Y creo que para mí es necesario reevaluar lo que es importante y tomarme un tiempo lejos del ajetreo y tomármelo con calma de vez en cuando.

I: Es una serie que se rodó en Italia y en España. Está ambientada en una ciudad ficticia llamada Greenville en un tiempo ficticio donde las personas intentan mantenerse con vida y prosperar. Es una serie de ocho partes.

¿Qué puedes decirnos sobre tu personaje, ‘Kurt’?

I: Interpreto a la mano derecha del ‘Sheriff McCoy’. ‘Kurt’ es un personaje fascinante. En ese mundo, notablemente asiático, es la única persona que se ve así. Entonces, fue una forma muy interesante de abordar esta historia, este mundo y este personaje.

I: Todo esto sucedió recientemente, así que no sé qué puedo decir sobre el proyecto. ¿Hay algún personaje que no hayas interpretado pero que te gustaría hacer algún día?

I: Me gusta mucho el surf y las artes marciales, y me encantaría interpretar personajes en esos mundos. He hecho muy pocas artes marciales frente a la cámara, pero las he estado practicando durante 24 años. Por lo general, no me llaman para hacer castings para estos personajes, lo cual está bien.

Es algo difícil de hablar, porque literalmente estoy viendo imágenes de personas que se parecen a mi abuela siendo golpeadas sin motivo alguno. Es increíblemente agravante. Entonces, el GoFundMe es para recaudar dinero para ayudar a estas personas a cubrir desde facturas médicas hasta lo que sea que sus familias necesiten. Creo que es algo que debe estar mucho más en los medios de comunicación, porque sin duda es un gran problema con el que nos enfrentamos hoy y tiene que detenerse.
