Tom Prior talks about his new movie 'Firebird'

Tom Prior is a well-known actor, producer, and writer who is renowned for his ability to create compelling stories and characters for both stage and television. The Theory of Everything, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and most recently Firebird are just a few of the previous works to which he has contributed.

Tom spoke with Padrisimo Magazine about Firebird, and how he thinks it would inspire viewers to love more bravely.

What do you think of the conversation in 2022 about abortion and gay marriage?

T: The fact that some places in the world are experiencing such backward progress on human rights is kind of scary in some ways. The book was released under a pseudonym in Russia, and it clearly has many parallels with the present day. I believe this story is fantastic for challenging modern audiences, regardless of where they are, to love harder.

Now that Firebird has been released, how do you feel about it?

T: It’s amazing to get these reflections on what people are feeling and what they are pulling out. And I’m glad to hear that it made you feel a little too. After making this movie personally for a long time and working on putting together the work for the last five years, there was a moment when I wondered what would happen if no one liked it <laugh>. Fortunately, the audience’s response to the movie is amazingly impressive. It’s really humbling to hear people write to me and say, “It helped someone.” Deepening the understanding of same-sex people is paramount, and it is for sympathy and the audience.

Could you introduce our audience to Firebird?

T: I’d say a universal love story. It really shares the feeling of what it means to really go after love in the direst and most challenging circumstances. It’s set in the Soviet Union at a fascinating point in cold war history. It’s set on a Russian air force base at the height of the cold war, and it really follows three friends who end up sort of forming a little bit of a love triangle, but invariably it's the two guys who end up falling in love and sort of fighting against all the odds to be together, no matter what.

What was challenging about bringing the script to life?

T: The authenticity and the sensitivity to this sort of subject matter. It’s a very well documented period and there are some very specific cultural

niches for that specific point of time. We wanted everything to be as realistic and as real as possible, and that was very challenging at times to find authentic pieces of equipment. Being true to Serge’s story was one of the biggest challenges for me personally. Since we adapted it from his memoir, we wanted to maintain the authenticity of his life’s events while still telling the story in a way that was both entertaining and honest.

From Sergey’s point of view of how he writes, Luisa was portrayed in the original story in quite a negative way and as being extremely unsympathetic. Therefore, I believed it was crucial that we also provided the audience with the female perspective in a very realistic and fair manner.

What can Tom learn from Sergey and vice versa?

T: In his determination to present himself unapologetically to the world without compromise, he wasn’t ashamed of who he was. He deliberately did not put himself in a dangerous situation. It was important to him to keep his loyalties to himself, to his heart, regardless of his surroundings, and even though he made good decisions about his surroundings, he never compromised himself. I think that’s what I learned through this process, as a person, and as an actor. From me, he would learn primarily how to smile and be charismatic.

What was it like to meet the actual Sergey?

T: Incredible! Meeting him was fascinating and incredibly helpful to me in portraying him in the film.

El libro fue publicado bajo un seudónimo en Rusia, y claramente tiene muchos paralelismos con la actualidad. Creo que esta historia es fantástica para desafiar a las audiencias modernas, independientemente de dónde se encuentren, a amar con más fuerza.

T: Es increíble tener estas reflexiones sobre lo que siente la gente. Me alegra saber que te hizo sentir un poco a ti también. Después de hacer esta película personalmente durante mucho tiempo y trabajar durante los últimos cinco años, hubo un momento en el que me pregunté qué pasaría si a nadie le iba a gustar (risas). Afortunadamente, la respuesta de la audiencia a la película es asombrosamente impresionante. Me conmueve escuchar a la gente que me escribe y me dice, “Ayudó a alguien”. Profundizar y tener empatía con las personas del mismo sexo es primordial.

¿Podrías presentarle a nuestra audiencia la película ‘Firebird’?

T: Yo diría que una historia de amor universal. Realmente comparte el sentimiento de lo que significa realmente ir tras el amor en las circunstancias más terribles y desafiantes. Está ambientado en la Unión Soviética en un punto fascinante en la historia de la guerra fría. Está ambientada en una base de la fuerza aérea rusa en el apogeo de la guerra fría, y realmente se trata de tres amigos que terminan formando una especie de triángulo amoroso, pero finalmente son los dos chicos los que terminan enamorándose y de alguna manera tiene que luchar contra viento y marea para estar juntos, pase lo que pase.

¿Qué fue lo desafiante de darle vida al guion?

T: La autenticidad y la sensibilidad a este tipo de temas. Es un período muy bien documentado y hay algunos nichos culturales muy específicos para ese momento específico. Queríamos que todo fuera lo más realista posible, y eso fue muy difícil a veces para encontrar piezas de equipo auténticas. Ser fiel a la historia de Serge fue uno de los mayores desafíos para mí personalmente. Dado que lo adaptamos de sus memorias, queríamos mantener la autenticidad de los eventos de su vida sin dejar de contar la historia de una manera entretenida y honesta.

Desde el punto de vista de Sergey sobre el personaje de 'Luisa' que fue retratada en la historia original de una manera bastante negativa y extremadamente antipática. Por lo tanto, creí que era crucial brindarle a la audiencia la perspectiva femenina de una manera muy rea-lista y justa.

Para él era importante mantener su lealtad a sí mismo, a su corazón, independientemente de su entorno, y aunque tomó buenas decisiones sobre su entorno, nunca se comprometió. Creo que eso es lo que aprendí a través de este proceso, como persona y como actor. De mí aprendería principalmente a sonreír y ser carismático.

¿Cómo fue conocer al Sergey real?

T: ¡Increíble! Conocerlo fue fascinante e increíblemente útil para mí a la hora de interpretarlo en la película.
